Newly released PrEP and PEP data through 2022 is now available on the ETE Dashboard. The overall number of persons filling prescriptions for PrEP in New York State increased 15%, from 44,046 in 2021 to 50,558 in 2022. Of these, 46,950 were prescribed to men and 3,608 to women.
Racial/ethnic disparities persist with Black New Yorkers making up only 12% (6,039) of PrEP recipients despite being 41% of all new HIV diagnoses in 2022. Conversely, 43% (21,520) of PrEP recipients are White New Yorkers while making up only 19% of new HIV diagnoses.
Although PrEP usage continues to trend up across New York State, the overall number still falls short of NYS’s goal of 65,000 individuals filling prescriptions for PrEP annually. Furthermore, the 25% (12,428) of PrEP users in New York State who are Medicaid beneficiaries are even further from the ETE goal of 30,000. This gap for Medicaid recipients along with the persistent disparities in usage between different racial and ethnic groups indicates there is still considerable ground to make up to meet NYS’s Ending the Epidemic targets.
PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) Use
PEP prescriptions in New York State decreased overall by 9% (2,876 to 2,617) from 2021 to 2022, continuing to decline since its peak of 3,300 prescribed individuals in 2019. However, recent upticks in 2022 PEP use were found among women (+5%) and persons aged 20-24 (+5%). More data is needed to better understand the impact that COVID-19, continued increases in PrEP utilization, and the other factors that have contributed to these recent trends in PEP use across different communities.
