Notes

  • Data Source: NYC HIV Surveillance Registry, HIV Epidemiology and Field Services Program – NYC DOHMH
  • Data reported through March 2023. Data reflect 12-month periods from January 1 - December 31.
  • Data for the year 2020 should be interpreted with caution due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on access to HIV testing, care-related services, and case surveillance activities.
  • All data shown are for people ages 13 and older.
  • Geographic residence refers to the most recent known residence as of the last day of the reporting quarter for all indicators on this page.
  • Borough-wide and citywide totals may include cases assigned to a borough with an unknown UHF or assigned to NYC with an unknown borough, respectively. Therefore, UHF totals may not sum to borough totals, and borough totals may not sum to citywide totals.
  • Data collection regarding current gender identity for PLWDH is conducted on an ongoing basis. Surveillance may have collected new information regarding a person’s current gender identity between the time of their HIV diagnosis and the publication of these data. Data on transgender people are collected at a citywide level with no other demographic stratifications, and cannot be displayed on the map. At smaller geographic levels or when combined with other demographic or risk characteristics, the Male category includes transgender men and the Female category includes transgender women.
  • The Other/Unknown race/ethnicity category includes people of Native American, multiracial, and unknown races.
  • When filtering by Gender, Age, Race, or Risk at the borough or UHF neighborhood level, trend data are not shown for some demographic/risk groups if the number of PLWDH in any given year for that group is <10.
  • Viral suppression by geographic region is best presented as a percent of PLWDH rather than as a standalone number. To view a map of the percent of persons virally suppressed, visit the HIV Care Cascades in NYC page.
