Every October 15, National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day recognizes the impact of HIV on Hispanic and Latinx communities and the people, organizations, and advocates working to end the epidemic. In New York State, the 2024 data show two things at once: once diagnosed, Hispanic/Latinx New Yorkers are getting into care and reaching viral suppression faster than the state as a whole. But they still account for a disproportionate share of new diagnoses, and they remain underrepresented among people using PrEP.

In 2024, Hispanic/Latinx New Yorkers accounted for 36% of all new HIV diagnoses in New York State (922 of 2,552), while making up just 19% of the state's population. That is nearly double their share of the population.

Over the longer term, new diagnoses among Hispanic/Latinx New Yorkers have declined 14.9% since 2015, from 1,083 to 922. The path has not been steady. HIV diagnoses fell to 571 in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted testing, care-related services, and public health surveillance activities, then rose each year through 2023 (to 926). In 2024, thattrend plateaued at 922, the first year since 2020 without an increase.

The HIV care outcomes data are encouraging. Among Hispanic/Latinx New Yorkers newly diagnosed with HIV in 2024:

  • 83% were linked to care within 30 days, compared with 82% statewide.
  • 65% achieved viral suppression within 3 months, compared with 61% statewide.

Both measures improved from 2023 (81% and 61%, respectively). Rapid linkage and viral suppression protect the health of people living with HIV and help prevent further transmission.

PrEP usage is where the gap is widest. In 2024, Hispanic New Yorkers made up just 10% of PrEP users in New York State, despite accounting for 36% of new diagnoses. By comparison, White New Yorkers made up 43% of PrEP users and 15% of all new HIV diagnoses.

With approximately 80% of Hispanic/Latinx people newly diagnosed with HIV in NYS coming from New York City, care outcomes there are similar. In 2024, Hispanic New Yorkers accounted for 41% of all new HIV diagnoses in the city (732 of 1,790). Of those newly diagnosed, 85% were linked to care within 30 days and 60% achieved viral suppression within 3 months.

Of the estimated 33,260 Hispanic New York City residents living with HIV, more than a third (36%, or 12,080) live in the Bronx.

In summation, since 2015, new HIV diagnoses among Hispanic/Latinx New Yorkers have declined 14.9%, and in 2024, linkage to care within 30 days and viral suppression within 3 months were at or above statewide levels. Hispanic/Latinx New Yorkers accounted for a considerably larger share of new HIV diagnoses (36%) than that of the overall population (19%), and the widest disparity that persists being related to PrEP use (10%). These measures will continue to be tracked as part of monitoring New York State's progress toward its Ending the Epidemic goals.
