2024 National HIV Testing Day
On this National HIV Testing Day, we present the latest HIV testing data for 2022, now available on the ETE Dashboard.
Consistent with historical trends in New York, HIV testing rates varied by race/ethnicity, age, and sex in 2022. 64.9% of Black New Yorkers and 59.5% of Hispanic New Yorkers reported ever being tested for HIV, as compared to only 30.9% of Asian/Pacific Islanders and 37.6% of White New Yorkers. HIV testing estimates stratified by age show that the least likely groups to be tested are young adults aged 18-24 (28.7% tested) and older adults aged 40+ (40.7% tested).
Women are more likely to get tested than men, with 47.8% of women having been tested compared to 43.2% among men. These numbers not only highlight the disparities that exist but also underscore the importance of targeted outreach and increased access to HIV testing. HIV testing in New York City
The statewide differences by sex, age, and race/ethnicity are also found when looking at data from only New York City. HIV testing data by borough shows that testing rates in Queens are among the lowest in the city at 18% tested in the last 12 months. On the ETE Dashboard’s trends among new diagnoses in NYC visualization page, we see that in 2022, concurrent HIV/AIDS diagnoses were highest among Queens residents at 23% (compared to 18% citywide). These data point to the important role that HIV testing has on reducing late HIV diagnoses, which is vital for effective treatment and prevention. View more testing data for NYC here…
